#7 Cover

"The cover has two main functions: it needs to express our brand and mission at a glance, and it also needs to work as a newsstand sales tool. We find that provocation and light sensationalism, mixed with clean design, do well for us."

Certain cover "rules" that some magazines follow or break:

  • faces sell best
  • a person looking out at the reader sells better than one looking to the side
  • avoid green and black
  • red stands out best
  • white gets dirty quickly
  • black is like a hole in the newsstand
  • irregular numbers like 37 or 622 sell better than 500 or 1000

I like how the name of the magazine is
arranged differently but at the same time that might be confusing for the reader as if he is used with the 4 letters put in every corner of the cover, he will look for that when he will want to buy the magazine.

I tried to look for magazines with covers that would represent my concept of being obsessed with something. It also depends on the model, if he/she can have that obsessed look when posing. Also, covers usually have lots of information but  I think I am going to go with less and try to make the cover engaging and interesting enough to make a viewer become a reader.
