#5 Typography

"What is more exciting than choosing your outfit before going out? Typography is the outfit of the text."

"If I tear a small piece out of a newspaper and still have the feeling that ' this is my newspaper', I have created a basic typography system that creates identity."

- magazines conventionally have most use for a variety of type - they use one style of text in the headline to grab the reader's attention, followed by an introductory text in another font that intrigues the reader with more information on the topic at hand

I like the red page. it stands out a lot!!

love the typography for these 2. very clean and sharp

I love the idea with the envelope. the one on top looks good as well, lots of white space

LOVE THE FONT

this one is interesting but 1. wouldn't suit may magazine 2. I think it looks a bit confusing.

this one is very simple but at the same time the way the D is done creates a nice effect. It feels like the whole page is filled.

#2 examples

might be too much red for this one; I like the font and how "index" looks but I don't think it will suit my magazine.

I do like this one. I think it would be perfect/great for the editor's page plus contributors.

New examples

I am not quite sure about the numbers if they look ok like that.

                                                      or like that.

I thought it would be nice to have the logo somewhere on the page. I quite like how I arranged the text near the images. Still, I don't know how the number would look better. I feel though like something is missing and that I should add or do something else to the page but then it might be too busy.

This is another version. I like what I have done on the left side of the page; looks nice. I do like how the logo looks on a red background.

After I added the text with the table of contents I realised that I don't have so much space for all the information. I only put the numbers there randomly but I don't know how I should arrange them because I feel that there is not enough space for all the info. At the same time, I wouldn't want to make the red background smaller but if I think about it, I made it half of page which might be too much. The only thing I could think about would be to make the numbers smaller and to add a small sentence for every page.

Table of contents - experiment

Feedback: red letters are very nice and clean, the other black text is not that good. it is not really working for a magazine.

Feedback: again, black text is not working, it should be clean and sharp; hexagons are cool; I should be careful with how  I position the page numbers because for example page 24 can be understood as page 2 and page 4.

these are just an early experiment. definitely more things to work on. on to that!!

New purchase

Really proud of my new purchase. I do like Oh Comely. I like the design a lot and especially the message that's inside, on the first page: " this magazine will make you smile [...]." Saw it for the first time at MAGMA, in London on my trip to see books.

Collaborators

I have messaged loads of people on Facebook to see if someone would like to be featured in the magazine. So far I have received yes-es but no-es as well.

I have got responses from quite a lot of make-up artists. Few photographers and more models. I have 2 shoots planned with 2 make-up artists, I have found my girls for the main article who said that her favourite colour is red which made me really excited.

I am going to work with her a lot, hope she is up for all my ideeeaas!!

I have also got some designs from Jade with whom I am am going to shoot.

I do like those designs and I am looking forward to the shoot!!!

4. Navigation

"Order, hierarchy, legibility & impact."

The most obvious navigation tool is the contents page/index pages where the structure is laid bare. Plus,on every page a publication will include a subtle navigational element such as:

  • page number
  • a section heading
  • sometimes an arrow to show that an article is continued on another page

As I love geometric forms, I noticed this layout immediately. I like it- it's sharp and modern and  I do like the number of pages at the top corner of the pages.

I did some research on table of contents and I have found some that were nice. Other examples that I liked:

What I like about this one is the fact that the actual table of contents is quite simple in the background whilst the foreground is a simple red letter applied to the page which gives it personality; the letter continues on the side which I like a lot(I said in a previous post about a possible idea of having the side of the magazine red. -I would love that). The letter is connected to the No at the top, I think. It might be - number A.

I like the first image, not the second one. I like the simplicity of it. Even without the pictures on the right I think it would look great. Sometimes, keeping it simple gives the paper some sort of elegance.

Again, using geometric forms gives the magazine a modern look. The fact that you can only see bits of the images gives the magazine a mysterious look. It is supposed to make you intrigued, to make you want to find out more because the images are not clear enough.

I always liked manual work and these calligraphic fonts. That is why I chose this example. I feel like if you use those kind of fonts you can make your piece of work more personal and intimate whilst if you use that kind of "stiff", bold font it makes me feel like it's not natural or that it's done following some rules.

simple and elegant

This example caught my eye instantly. I believe that is quite ingenious and clever. If I were to relate this example to my concept, having an obsessions means having something that keeps going on and on, something continuous. When you try to hypnotize someone, you would use something round that gives you that feeling of something that never ends; that is why I believe this example this kind of design would be interesting to try for my magazine.

I was thinking to use images as well in my table of  contents and I think that the arrangement of the images, framed like triangles does a good job and it would be attractive to the eye.

I don't necessarily like this example. What I do like is the idea of having the contents rotated to the left or right to give it energy along with some images maybe instead of leaving it blank with only text.

I did find this one interesting. I don't know if this kind of design will suit my magazine and my concept but it caught my attention and it's worth trying, why not?

I am still going to look after other design but at the same time I will try and create my versions as well.
